Paper Plane Forces

After we made our paper plane in Science we tested them but mine didn’t fly very far because it went nose-first into the ground. This happened because gravity pulled it down, and there wasn’t enough lift the force that pushes it up. It might not have had enough push forward, or there was too much air pushing against it called drag. To stay in the air longer, a plane needs more lift and less drag to fight gravity.

Reflection – MELIP2

We did not do much in the first two weeks. But in the third week, we did an activity to help us understand the CARR values in our own terms. In the fourth week, we made our family trees, which was fun and interesting.

Then we did three weeks of reciprocal reading. There are four roles for this style of readingpredictor, clarifier, questioner, and summarizer. We worked on the two books Fake News and Diary of a Wild Boy in sharing the roles. We also presented Diary of a Wild Boy.

After that, we learned the three-level guide for three weeks. This guide encourages us to consider what we read three ways: what it literally says (in the line), what it suggests and implies but does not literally say (between the line), and what our own minds can work out (beyond the line). Over the same week, we had read a short story called Ka Kite Bro and used the three-level guide to interpret it.

Genetics Summary Test

For the past week in Science, we have done a variation of Genetics, such as DNA, Genes, Alleles, and Punnet Squares. We first started learning with the basics such as learning what DNA does. We also learned what DNA is made of.  DNA is made out of Sugar Phosphate Backbones. We then learned about Alleles. Alleles are different versions of a gene. For example, a gene that determines what hair color a child will get is a black allele and a white allele. Combining these alleles can determine specific traits for an organism.

Alleles can be recessive or dominant. Alleles play a big role in Punnet Squares, Punnet Squares are basically charts showing how traits are passed on from a parent to their offspring. These squares help predict what gene a kid can inherit from their parent. Scientists use Punnett Squares to understand how traits like genetic disorders are inherited.

DNA is the material that carries living things grow and work. A gene is a specific section of DNA that determines traits like eye color or hair color. Within each gene, an allele is a different version of a trait, such as blue or green eyes. Offspring inherit alleles from their parents, getting one from each parent. Punnet squares are used to predict how alleles combine and what traits an organism has.

The Outsiders – English

What circumstances ‟did Ponyboy’s teacher refer to? What circumstances does Ponyboy think his teacher is referring to?

  • Ponyboy’s teacher refers to his failing grades and the trouble he has been in since the rumble and Johnny’s death. The teacher offers him a chance to write a composition to pass the class.Ponyboy, however, thinks the teacher is talking about his personal struggles, like losing Johnny and Dally, dealing with grief, and the fights between the Greasers and Socs.

Why doesn’t Ponyboy feel scared when the Socs approach him and he threatens them with a broken bottle? How is this a dramatic change from the Ponyboy we have seen up until now? Was there anything odd about Pony’s behaviour?

  • Ponyboy doesn’t feel scared because he has become tougher and less afraid after everything he has been through. Unlike before, he fights back without hesitation, showing how much he has changed. This is a big shift from the old Ponyboy, who was more gentle and avoided violence. What’s odd is that he seems cold and detached, acting more like Dally than himself.

What does Darry mean when he says, “You don’t just stop living because you lose someone”?

  • Darry means that life goes on, even after losing someone you love. He wants Ponyboy to stay strong and not give up despite Johnny and Dally’s deaths. Darry knows grief is hard, but he believes they must keep living and moving forward.

What does Ponyboy end up doing for his English assignment? Why the title of the book? Who is the biggest Outsider of them all and why?

  • Ponyboy writes his life story for his English assignment, which becomes The Outsiders. He chooses the title because it represents people who don’t fit in, like the Greasers and Socs.Johnny is the biggest outsider because he never felt truly safe or accepted, even within his own group. His abusive home, quiet nature, and tragic fate set him apart the most.

Reflection – MELIP2

Hello Readers.

For the last two weeks in MELIP2, my class and I did an activity called Reciprocal Reading. In this activity, we were put into groups of four, and each person had a role: Predictor, Clarifier, Questioner, or Summarizer.

I was the Clarifier, Summarizer, Predictor. First, the predictor guesses what the book would be about. Then, we read it, and then the Clarifier clarifies any words people ask. Then the Questioner ask questions about anything that happened in the book and the Summarizer gave a short summary of the book.

The goal was to help us understand difficult words and work together. The hardest part for me was helping others on what to do because I didn’t know what to help them with or what to do.

Athletics Blog: 2025

This Monday, our school held an athletics event for years 7 – 13. The event was organised by the school and its staff. It was a fun and exciting event. Here is the blog I made on it.

Kahui: Mohua

Age Group: Under 15s

Events:

1. 100m Sprints

2. Long Jump

3. Discus

Results:

1. 100m Sprints: (13.24)

2. Long Jump: (4.02)

3. Discus: (35m)

The event that I enjoyed the most would be the 100m Sprint. I love running and the act of competing against other people also made me happy.

On the other hand, the thing I would do differently next time would be nothing. I enjoyed everything.

My Spiritual Hauora was great too just like the others as I did calm breathing.

My Emotional Hauora was the best of all as the Athletics event was good.

My Physical Hauora was a little sick, since I had a fever at the time.

My Social Hauora was also good as I connected with friends.

Zombie Punnetts

Last Friday in Science, we had to create a hypothetical zombie. We had to use our knowledge of punnet squares and genetics to complete the task. This is a blog on the task we did.

Aim: Creating A Hypothetical Zombie

Method:

Hair: Green or Brown, Chosen: Green

Limbs: 4 or 1, Chosen: 4

Clothes: Shorts & Shirt or Jacket, Chosen: Shorts & Shirt

Teeth: 3 or 2, Chosen: 3

Weapon: Chopstick or Fist, Chosen: Chopstick

Chocolate Game – Health

Last week in health we played a game called Chocolate Game, how we played was we sat in a big circle and had to roll a dice. If we rolled a 6 we would then have to go in the middle of the circle and put on pieces of clothing, the clothing involved a beanie, gloves, jumper and scarf. We would have to then put all of these on one by one, after we were finished putting the clothes on we then had to grab the knife and fork.

The 2 areas of my hauroa that were affected whilst playing the chocolate game was my Taha Tinana and my Taha whanau. My Taha Tinana was affected by moving around and cutting chocolate,  I also moved up and down to the middle. My Taha whanau was affected by being with all my close friends and mates.

Fairness was shown because everyone rolled the dice and even got turns, they also all had the chance to get chocolate.

I participated heaps and got so many chocolates.

Y10 Social Studies

This week on Social Studies, we’re learning about the Treaty of Waitangi, what really happened, and who signed it. To help us understand the Treaty Signing, our teacher Mr. Quinn found a YouTube video of everything that we were learning about how, where, who, and when it was signed. We also learned some of the Māori Chiefs’ names.

What Really Happened at Waitangi?

Have a good day.

DNA Extraction – Science

Hello Viewers.

For Science we have been learning about DNA’s and how everyone has different kinds of DNA. For today, our task was to do a DNA extraction on a banana. The aim for this experiment is to know the different kinds of DNA’s and how it is important for us to know that they are very special to us. For this task we need to have the followings.

Equipment:

1) Zip Lock Bag

2) Banana

3) Teaspoon of Water

4) Teaspoon of Salt

5) Cloth

6) Beaker

7) Test Tube

8) Warm Water

9) Ethanol

10) Safety Glasses

 Method:

1) The first step into making this a DNA extraction is to use the zip lock bag and put in the bananas there with no skin on them. Once your done with that, the next step is to add a teaspoon of water and a teaspoon of salt. Right after that, start mushing the bananas. For my team we decided to mush the banana with our hands.

2) Once your done mushing the banana, The next step is to strain the mushed banana through the cloth into the beaker. (Hint: This can take a while so make sure you wait.) Once you have done it correctly, the beaker inside should have this white thing inside it which is the DNA.

3) Then after that add a squirt of dish-washing liquid and stir it. Once you are done with that the next thing you will need to do is pour the beaker which has the banana, salt and water inside a test tube.

4) After that get another beaker and place warm water inside the other beaker. Once you are done with that you can put the testing tube onto the beaker which has the warm water. Leave that out for 10 minutes.

5) Now the last step is to take it out of the warm water and apply 5mL of ethanol inside the tube, And finally you are done!

The aim: To understand the DNA’s inside living things.

For my team, my friend had helped me take the photos for our team. Here are the photos that me and my team had to do for this experiment. It was a great time doing this experiment and had learnt alot of things about DNA’s
